Pineapple juice is the most recommended when you have cough especially with phlegm as it contains strong properties that will act against it. According to studies done in India, pineapple juice contains vitamin C and bromelain which have the ability to reduce inflammation in the body and aid in the breakdown of bonds of mucous proteins, making it more fluid and easy to eliminate.

Other ingredients can also be added to the pineapple juice to make it more delicious and strengthen the immune system or decrease inflammation which will in turn relieve cough.

1. Pineapple juice with ginger and honey

Ginger is a root tuber that has strong anti-inflammatory properties that together with bromelain in pineapple, helps in relieving cough as well as fighting possible infections that may arise in the throat region when attacked by a flu.

In addition, ginger and honey also help in soothing the tissues that line the throat, decreasing common symptoms that arise due to a cough such as an irritated throat.

  • 1 slice pineapple
  • 1 cm ginger root
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Preparation mode

Peel and cut the pineapple and ginger into pieces then put all the ingredients in a blender then blend until you obtain a homogenous mixture. Drink half a glass of the juice 2 to 3 times a day or whenever you experience a stronger cough.

This juice should only be taken by adults and children above 2 years. Pregnant women should only prepare the juice using 1g of ginger.

2. Pineapple, pepper and salt juice

Although this may seem like a strange mixture, a review done by natural remedies in the treatment of tuberculosis says that the mixture has strong properties which dissolve pulmonary mucus and relive cough.

This effect is related to the ability of the salt to absorb water, which in turn fluidises the phlegm. The capsaicin in pepper also has strong analgesic properties.

  • 1 slice of pineapple peeled and in pieces
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Preparation mode

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until you get a homogenous mixture. You can add 1 or 2 tablespoons of water if necessary to make the juice more liquid.

Drink the juice only once a day or divide it into three doses to drink it throughout the day. The juice contains honey and therefore it should only be taken by adults and babies who are older than 1 year.

3. Pineapple, strawberry and ginger juice

Strawberry is a fruit that works well when taken with pineapple as it is rich in vitamin C which help in strengthening of the immune system. When taken together with pineapple and ginger, the juice will have anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce irritation of the respiratory system hence fighting cough.
