A great home remedy for cough is taking guaco juice mixed with carrot. This juice has bronchodilator properties and it can therefore relieve cough that is accompanied with phlegm, promoting well-being. Moreover, ginger tea with lemon is also an alternative option and it is recommended for dry cough because it has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions.
You can also take a glass of water containing 1 spoon full of honey to complement these remedies. It helps to moisturize the vocal cords and calming the entire throat region hence decreasing cough. However, it is important to know the root cause of the cough so that the right treatment is taken.
1. Dry cough
A great home remedy to relieve dry cough is taking ginger tea with lemon. It has anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing irritation of the throat and lungs. This juice also decongests the airways and relieves dry cough.
This tea can also be used as a home remedy for cough in children as it has no side effects.
- 140 g ginger root
- Juice of 2 lemons
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1/2 litre of water
For this remedy, boil the ginger and water over low heat until the mixture is reduced by half the original volume. Turn off the heat, strain the mixture then add lemon juice. Add 1 tea spoon of honey to sweeten but if the juice is given to babies under 1 year old then honey should not be added.
Take 1 tablespoon of the tea every 4 hours if the cough persists.
2. Cough on baby
The baby’s cough can be controlled by using some home remedies. These include lemon tea with honey, but it should only be given to babies who are above 1 year. This is because those under 1 year do not have a fully developed immunity.

- 500 ml of water
- 2 tablespoons (soup) of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of honey
Boil water in the covered pan for about 10 minutes then add lemon juice and honey. Let it warm and give the baby in small amounts.
Another tip is to add a few drops of saline water in the baby’s nose before breastfeeding then then wipe the nose using a baby swab. This will also help in relieving cough.
3. Cough with phlegm
To relive cough with phlegm, take guaco juice with carrot because it contains bronchodilator and expectorant properties. This will help in elimination of excess phlegm and allow you to breath better. - 5 leaves of guaco
- 1 carrot
- 2 sprigs of mint
- 1 teaspoon honey
To make this juice, add guaco leaves, carrots and mint branches to the blender. Sweeten with 1 teaspoon of honey then drink about 20ml of the juice several time a day.
Another great home remedy for cough that is accompanied with phlegm is thyme infusion. This juice has expectorant properties that will help in releasing phlegm and strengthening of the immune system.
4. Allergic cough
An allergic cough can be relieved using some medicinal plants such as nettle, rorela and tanchage. This is because they contain n calming properties that will relive discomfort in the throat and consequently reduce cough.
- 1 tablespoon of nettle leaves
- 200 mL of water
Put nettle leaves in water and simmer for about 5 minutes. Let the drink cool and drink 2 cups a day. If necessary, you can add 1 spoonful of honey to sweeten it.
These natural remedies for relieving cough should not exclude the use of medications that have been prescribed by the doctor. This is especially for cases of allergic cough that are treated with antihistamines.
